Congratulations to our partners in Shengmu who won at Belmont yesterday at her second race start. The tough win suggests it will not be her only win.
Shengmu in a thriller
Belmont Park has experienced a thrilling finish to start the day on Belmont Classic Day with a four-way photo finish in the WestSpeed Nursery over 1000 metres.
Shengmu, a filly by Fath, trained by Fred Kersley impressed all onlookers with her trial victory on June 16 by 6 lengths.
She was supported from that performance when first-up, but from barrier 14, she couldn’t quite do enough over the final stages to win.
Second-up in a quality field, she was left safe in the market at $7.00 but connections and Kersley were confident she would match up in this company.
Jumping from a better barrier this time (3), Chris Parnham was able to position her in an ideal position just off the speed.
Parnham was able to move off the fence as they cornered and then launched his run four-wide at the top of the straight on the filly.
She wound up nicely and joined the leaders with 200 metres to go, but she was joined by Rule To Wyn, Well Spoken Man and Castle Retreat who all battled it out to the line.
The result went to a photo finish and it was Shengmu who got there on the bob by a short head in a time of 00.58.42.
