First Saturday win for Triple Jay
Promising gelding Triple Jay landed the first Saturday city win of his career at Ascot on the weekend when proving too good in the Amelia Park Handicap (1100m).
Heading the market at $2.40, the Street Boss four-year-old was able to go one better than his narrow runner-up finishes at his first two runs back from a spell when leading all of the way with William Pike aboard.
The imposing galloper was heavily pressured by rivals turning for home but responded brilliantly when clawing back the lead and kicking clear over the final furlong to defeat Ruler Rocket ($2.80) by almost two lengths.
Magic To Exceed ($5.50) finished a further three-quarter-length away in third place.
Beaten only a neck at his previous two starts, Triple Jay put the writing on the wall for his winning return when producing a gallant performance to finish a close second after being posted three wide and without cover in running on October 28.
The Oakland Park-bred gelding has now had eight career starts for three wins, three second placings and $109,113 in stake and Westspeed earnings.
