Punters have latched onto veteran stayer Kincaple for the Group II $400,000 Perth Cup (2400m) at Ascot on New Year’s Day.

Kincaple was gunned down late by classy three-year-old Ihtsahymn in the Group II CB Cox Stakes (2100m) last Saturday which has prompted a flow of money for the eight-year-old son of Pentire.

Sportsbet says Kincaple has been the best backed runner in early markets for the Perth Cup and is currently quoted at $6.50 over the past 24 hours.

The Mike Reed-trained galloper sits behind the $5.50 favourite Rohan and the $6 chance Black Tycoon.

Ben Hawes from Sportsbet says that punters have been unperturbed by Kincaple’s age with the 2400 metres expected to be more suitable than the 2100 metre of last Saturday’s weight-for-age contest.

“Kincaple is an eight-year-old, but the punters don’t seem to care,” Hawes said. “He was very game in the Cox and the 2400m of the Cup will be right up his alley.”

Sportsbet can also reveal that Pop Culture, who occupies the fourth line of betting at $7, has been the second most popular with punters whilst Fancy Feet has also had a trickle of support at $26.
